Do you want to start a profitable blog but are unsure what to blog about?
How to decide what to start a blog about to make money?
In this article, I’m going to explain how to choose a blog topic that is both exciting and profitable.
So:
”What type of blogs make money?” I hear you ask.
The good news is you have lots of options to choose from. You can make money in almost any blogging niche that you decide to enter.
As long as people read your blog, you can monetize it. It’s as simple as that 🙂
Below is a list of the 3 deadly blogging myths I’ve come across that you shouldn’t follow.
By the end of each section, I’ll give you my best practical advice on how you can figure out what to blog about.
BLOGGING MYTH #1: You should be an expert in your blogging niche
If you want to make money blogging, you don’t have to be an expert in your niche from day 1, but you should at least be curious to learn about it as you go.
Unfortunately, many people think they have to be an expert in a given field in order to create a successful blog around the topic.
Perfection is what is holding many people back from starting a blog in their first place.
I know people who have spent years trying to decide what to blog about, because of the pressure of doing everything perfectly.
The bottom line is: you don’t have to be an expert on your blogging topic. It just has to be a topic that gets you excited when talking about it.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD
When deciding what to blog about, think of yourself as a LEADING LEARNER.
A learning leader is someone who has a lot of interesting things to say about the topic, is willing to explore them further and pass on these learnings to their blog audience.
What are you learning about at the moment? Teach that. You’ll always be a step or two ahead of others, and they’ll appreciate your perspective.
If you’re still unsure what to blog about ask yourself these questions:
- What can you talk about for hours?
- What are you Googling or learning about in your downtime?
- What your friends and family ask you to help them with?
- What do you do in your spare time?
- What do you like to listen to/read/watch?
- What did you find interesting in school or university?
- If you could do one thing for the rest of your life and get paid for it, what would it be?
Now go ahead and make a list of these answers. I’m sure you’ll see some patterns there – this is a good place to start when deciding what to blog about.
BLOGGING MYTH #2 You should narrow down your blogging niche from day 1
If you’re fortunate enough to have one overarching passion in your life, like backpacking in South East Asia or vegan cakes, then you can easily narrow down your blogging niche right away.
But let’s be real:
Majority of us have more than 1 interests. There are so many topics we want to write about that it would be paralyzing picking just one.
Which is why most newbie bloggers are better off just writing about things they like until they hit upon a specific topic that resonates with their fans
FOR EXAMPLE!
A lifestyle blogger Kumbearxo started writing broadly about lifestyle, but as she went on, she realized that what actually resonated with her audience was her curly big hair (a niche she would have never guessed herself would work). As a result, she now mainly focuses on curly hair styling and care advice, which got her an ambassador contact with L’Oreal and lots of other exciting work opportunities.
There are many more similar examples where bloggers start broad to allow them to discover what resonates with their audience and only then niche down.
I know people who chose a narrow niche from the beginning, spent 6 months on their blog, only to end up deciding they or their audience weren’t interested in that topic after all. I don’t want this to happen to you.
Be flexible. Don’t be afraid to dive in and figure it out as you go. This is how the majority of top bloggers get started. This is how I got started.
If you’re like most of us, you’ll probably change your mind along the way anyway.
The most important thing is to resist the paralysis of analysis. Don’t get stuck at this point in the process because you’re terrified of making the “wrong choice.”

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD
When deciding what to blog about, instead of waiting for the eureka moment or the perfect niche, just start a blog now and learn to find niche later on.
That’s what we (bloggers) do most of the time. When starting a new blog, keep the blog name fairly broad so you’ll have the freedom to narrow down your niche without rebranding.
Just make sure that if your broad blog topic is health, then you stick to health content and not switch to travel or fashion the next week, because the part of your audience that’s only interested in health is not going to care about your travels or fashion. So, they will lose interest and you lose your audience.
BLOGGING MYTH #3: Pick a blogging niche that is unique
Picking a blogging niche that doesn’t have any competition is a bad idea for several reasons:
-
-
- No competition is a sign that there is no demand
- There is no such thing as truly ‘unique idea’
-
Don’t worry about having a unique topic for your blog, especially if you want to make money.
Think about it:
If nobody is competing in your space, there’s a very good chance that the market is too small or unprofitable.
Without people already making money in your niche, how can you be sure you will?
Blogging works the same way as any other business. If there’s money to be made, someone will seize the opportunity.
Demand means you’ll find an audience. Audience means blog traffic. Blog traffic means monetization opporFtunities.
Competitors are great because they have done the groundwork for you. Your competitors have created a whole industry and demand for what you’re trying to do, so you don’t have to start from scratch.
Making money in a niche that nobody has even monetised is risky because you have to create a brand new demand in the market, which may not work out.
So you are better off just writing about evergreen topics that others are already profiting from.
The most profitable evergreen niche markets are Health, Wealth and Romance.
These markets are always relevant to consumers and will be profitable forever [even during the recession].
Within each of these niche markets are sub-niches and this is what you need to discover and determine for yourself eventually.
For example:
Health -> Healthy food -> Vegan recipes
Wealth -> Careers -> Freelance career
Romance -> Dating -> Dating as a single mother
As of having a unique blog – your experience will make it unique. You have a distinct voice. And, you probably have a vibrant personality and interesting points of view.
Your so-called competitors can never write it from the same place that you can. And that’s a competitive advantage for you when deciding what to blog about.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD
When deciding what to blog about, read similar blogs you want to create and ask yourself:
What’s missing on these blogs?
Is your favourite blogger missing a major point about the given subject?
Another question to ask when reading other blogs in your niche:
What groups are ignored?
Maybe your favourite fashion blog focuses on high-end fashion only, which is unaffordable for the majority of people?
Once you’ve read a dozen of blogs, you start to see that all those blogs miss something particular. Once you found that gap, start a blog focusing on presenting a solution to that gap.
Final advice: What should you blog about?

It doesn’t matter what your blog is about. If you have an audience, you can monetize your blog.
I believe anyone can make money blogging as long as they focus on solving problems.
People always want to be better versions of themselves. So pick a niche where you can teach people to become better at something.
Be it to look better, feel healthier, be a better photographer, travel to beautiful places on a budget, become a better parent or anything else you are passionate about.
